Wayne Phipps shares:

"This is the old Charlie Model.  I came to B Troop in Dec '67 and left in Feb '70.  Some of the best soldiers I knew flew on it . . . Gary Thomas, Dave Truman and Ray High. Between the 14 rockets, the 200 rounds of 40mm chunkers, the pole mounted 50 .cal on the left door, and, briefly, a pole mounted mini gun on the right door, the M-60's in the floor and all of the ammo she carried, she couldn't take on much fuel.  We often had to run along-side on take off because she was overweight.  But, as is witnessed by the 'coolie hats' painted on the door post, there was hell to pay while she was on a mission. Rick Chesson is credited with developing the 40mm system on the Charlie Model. This photo was taken in mid '69. At that time, she only had 31 confirmed kills but she went on to many, many more."
